The origins of Parasite date back to 1992, when after leaving a death metal outfit from Ada Oklahoma called Destructive Criticism, Joe D. & Brad Day sought to combine thrash metal, doom metal and stoner metal with some of the classic 70’s party rock atmosphere & charisma of bands such a Kiss and Black Sabbath. Equal parts Slayer, Cathedral, Monster Magnet, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Venom, Celtic Frost and Exodus.
SP arose in the OKC metal scene in its initial lineup from 1992-1995, after which mark 1 came to an end and mark 2 began; first with Micah Nix on drums, then Tyson on bass, this lineup existed through 2004, with infrequent gigs on often (purposefully) eclectic bills, always playing with bands that went outside the lines of being only within the metal circle. SP never quite fit into any one scene, and this was by design… after all the band began out of a frustration that came after initially playing thrash metal, until it’s rules became stifling creatively and the members therefore decided all boundaries were a waste of time, and so was the thought of proving how metal they might be… truth is they all love and live metal as much as any other metal bands, but also came to a point where they’d put in years and years into the metal scene, to realize there was nothing left to prove to anyone but themselves.
The band issued 5 EP releases between 1992 and 2004, the 1st 2 releases by the mark 1 lineup (with Joe D.-gtr, vocals, Brad-drums, and Chuck-bass), and the last 3 were from the time frame of the mark 2 lineup (with Joe D.-gtr-vocals, Micah Nix-drums, Tyson-bass), they are: SOCIAL PARASITE (1992), PSYCHEDELIC PHARMACY-1995-the most well produced and heaviest release, RAPED BY MISERY-1997, SCUM GOD-1998 (which included a song released on a vinyl compilation by Roctober mag.-entitled ‘Nazi Graffiti’), then SICK SICK SICK in 2004. In 2006 and 2007 a few other songs were recorded (a cover of Venom ‘In League With Satan’ & the instrumental ‘2 Bottles of Fussy Pussy’), these one offs-were released in 2010 as part of the ‘ACCUMULATED BLUR’ compilation CD, which was released to commemorate mark 3 of Parasite, which now had the current lineup of Joe D.-gtr/vocals, Christophe Murdock-bass/vocals and Jeff ‘The Jester’ on drums. New songs played live included the doomy stomp of ‘In The Mouth Of The Worms’, a handful of songs written and sung by Christophe Murdock (‘Hellbound’, ‘1984’, ‘Another Nail In The Coffin’) along with covers by Celtic Frost, Black Sabbath and Venom.
Social Parasite delivered a stage show that’s built around an ominous ambiance and atmosphere. With no rules PARASITE were a band unto itself… un-able to be categorized and un-able to be phased by anything… Existence for itself-by itself-on it’s own island-inside it’s own planet, with the uncommon attitude/belief and integrity which basically boils down to knowing they exist to keep certain people away as much as to bring certain people in. One thing SP certainly does deliver though, is originality, entertainment and a true-from the heart belief in what they do.
Founder of the band, Joe D., passed away in July of 2013.
